One of my favourite places on the planet is a small town at the edge of the Llyn Peninsula called Criccieth. I have been visiting Criccieth since I was a young girl originally on trips with the Girl Guiding Association, first as a Brownie staying in Ynysgain on “pack holiday” and later camping as a Girl Guide in the fields next door. We would walk down to the sea, then along the shore to the town where we were treated to a Cadwallader’s ice cream, which to this day remains my favourite place for an ice cream and I have been known to travel specifically just to have an ice cream there! Above Cadwallader’s Ice Cream Parlour stands the ruins of Criccieth Castle which looks over the town and effectively splits the shoreline, with Marine Beach to the west and East Shore (unsurprisingly) to the east.

Here we are on East Shore looking out from the boardwalk at Dylan's Restaurant at the far end of the promenade, gazing across the bay towards Harlech. If it weren’t for a rather chilly wind and the lack of roaming tourists, it would have been very easy to think it was the middle of summer rather than early April. Blissful. And no visit to Criccieth would be complete without attempting to skim stones across the water, a skill I learnt here as a Brownie all those years ago.
