Day 6 finds us to the west of Llanrwst hovering over the beautiful Llyn Crafnant. A lone figure walks along the road and the rocky shoreline can clearly be seen quickly giving way to deeper waters. This was one of the first photos I took when out and about with my DJI Mavic Mini 2 and I was pretty blown away by how good the images are that came from it - this is straight-from-drone and has not been edited. I love that there are evergreen trees on one side and deciduous trees on the opposite bank. I imagine this must be a pretty spectacular scene when the autumn leaves are about ready to fall and this is a location that is definitely on my list to return to.
We’ll talk some more about my visit to Llyn Crafnant later this month, but here I’d like to quickly touch on drone photography. I have owned a drone for about 18 months, having been inspired to purchase one by what my brother was managing to capture with his. I am captivated by the different viewpoint it gives and the image opportunities it has opened up. But, I have not taken my drone out flying as much as I would like. I worry about the perception of drones, particularly if there are people at a location prior to my arrival. I do not wish to spoil anybody’s enjoyment anywhere, be it through noise or concerns about privacy. The drones I own are both very lightweight, and whilst they “buzz” during take off and at low altitudes, the majority of time they are almost inaudible at height. As for privacy, I am a landscape photographer, I am here to photograph the scenery, be that the stunning mountains of Eryri, the rising of the sun over the Menai Strait or the dancing of the Aurora above the pier. I am certainly not here to “spy” on anybody and have no interest in doing so.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on drones. Are my concerns valid about drones being seen as a nuisance or am I worrying about nothing?
