DAY 4 #PHOTOGRAPHERCHALLENGE
There are many stories that will be told surrounding my images of Bangor Garth Pier, but the one I want to focus on today is that of the Friends of Bangor Garth Pier. FBGP are a group of volunteers whose aim is to support the protection, restoration and preservation of Bangor Garth Pier. They also want to educate people about the historical significance of this Grade II listed Victorian pier and the importance of the area it stands in, the Menai Strait. Money from admission at the entrance kiosk is used to help fund ongoing maintenance, whilst profits from the gift shop pay for special projects on the pier, such as reconstructing one of the kiosks.
FBGP additionally raise money to support their aims by hosting special community events and the image I share here comes from the closing of one such event. Taken on 18th May last year, 127 years to the day that the pier was officially opened, the Garth Pier Music Festival was held to mark both the pier’s birthday and to celebrate winning Pier of the Year in 2023. And what a wonderful day it was! We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of volunteers, bringing the community together and protecting our heritage for the future.
