Day 25 continues our journey through northern Norway. We visited a recreation area, roughly 19 miles from Tromsø, on the south of Kvaløya named Straumhella. The area is free to access with fine rocky outcrops and has beautiful views towards Bentsjordtinden and the island of Ryøya. It’s a popular landing spot for the boats that brave the incredibly strong currents and with an abundance of pollock and cod it is an attractive fishing spot.
This photo shows some of the buildings found on the site. They were originally moved from “Old” Tromsø in the 1960s in the hopes of preserving these important structures for the enjoyment of future generations and in the summer months these houses are available as overnight accommodation. The colours of the buildings are what caught my eye here, beautifully contrasting with each other and with the whiteness of the surrounding snow. Simple but effective.
From here we travelled north to Ersfjordbotn (see Day 14) and on route we came across a lone reindeer, so we even managed some wildlife photography. When travelling in the future I will certainly be considering doing a photography tour with a local guide. Their knowledge of the area, the history and stories told and of course the unique photo opportunities presented make them a worthy investment.
