Day 20. This photo is definitely a discussion point. What do you see here? What is going on in this picture?
Let's turn the world upside down! Going back to my point about making sure to look for different viewpoints (look up, look down, get up high or down low), this adds a whole new dimension, which is sometimes worth a try, particularly when, like here, reflections are involved. Inverting an image is something I do quite often with my lensball photography, when the surroundings are unimportant or the image in the ball is the main focus in the frame. With this photo I decided to try turning it upside down as the reflections of the boats were nicer to look at than the boats the right way up which were split in two by the horizon (and its reflection). The original photo, while full of beautiful sunrise colours, just seemed a bit uninteresting.
If I could go back and change this photo, looking at it now, I would want to get more of the reflection of the boats in, so that the horizon would sit further down, along the bottom third of the image. Unfortunately, this would not have been possible as I would have needed to get closer to the water, and from where I was on Marine Walk, it was an 8ft drop straight into the water and I definitely would not have enjoyed the swim on the way to work!
It is important to go back and look over shots and see where improvements can be made - nobody gets 100% of their shots right 100% of the time. Even the very best world-class photographers have duffs, an idea that didn’t work out as planned, a composition that just isn’t attention grabbing, even shots that don’t quite have the right settings. It is important to make errors, as it’s a great way to learn, and it is equally important to experiment - if you are always doing the same thing, you will always get the same results and you’ll never be open the the new and wonderful possibilities that are out there, just waiting to be discovered.
Are you a lover or a hater of this photo? Have a look at it the “correct” way around and tell me which you prefer!
