Day 17. Hovering above Conwy on an evening in late summer brings us to some lovely views over the Afon Conwy estuary towards Deganwy, Llandudno and the Great Orme. Conwy Marina, Bodlondeb Wood, the Town Walls and pristine boats lined up on pontoons facing the castle and suspension bridge complete the view.
Ordinarily in this situation I’d be looking to the sunset. My favourite things in life are the following: sunsets/sunrises, shooting stars, falling snow and the Northern Lights - I’m a pretty simple creature at heart! But on this particular evening, the sunset was looking fairly nondescript, so it was time to see what else there was to look at. The last rays of golden sunlight were hitting Deganwy’s Quay Hotel and the river was unusually still, reflecting the sporadic clouds that peppered the sky. The town tennis courts are seen nearing the completion of their renovation and the last few remaining tourists of the day can be seen on the town walls. An idyllic end to a day towards the end of the season, everything is rolling to a close, autumn is on its way.
I was lucky enough to be in a town centre setting at this time (with the landowners permission of course), which made this a relatively easy scene to align. Finding the right location to launch can be a big factor in how successful the images are due to the obvious (and legal) requirement to keep the drone within line-of-sight. Starting off as close to the ideal point for capturing your subject means that once you are airborne you should have plenty of scope for manoeuvring and finding that perfect composition.
