Day 14. Welcome to Norway! A few years ago I was lucky enough to take a trip to Norway, with my dad and stepmum, in search of the Northern Lights. So many beautiful photo opportunities, but alas the Aurora evaded us - more on that a few days from now. When I first sat down to write about this photo I was drawn to so many memories from that trip and ended up writing an entirely different post, but I shall save that for another day.
We were based in Tromsø and went out on a number of excursions, including a day of photography with a local guide. We were taken to a variety of locations with the final stop being here in Ersfjordbotn at the eastern end of Ersfjorden. Surrounded by mountains, this inlet of the Norwegian Sea appears nearly to be enclosed, with the island of Risøya visible at the far end almost looking like one of the many cruise ships that bring people to see the fjords. With the looming presence of the snow covered mountains rolling straight into the water of the fjord, it is hard to imagine this land green and vibrant in the summer, but despite being within the Arctic Circle, it is far enough south to avoid being a land of eternal winter and in the summer months the skiers and Aurora-chaser are replaced with rock climbers and hikers. Ersfjordbotn is only a small village, with a population of less than 500, but the lure of sea fishing and plenty of wildlife to watch, including whales, coupled with the aforementioned activities makes this a destination for visitors to the area year round.
Norway is 100% a place I would love to come back to and visit, be it returning to Tromsø to explore this stunning area further, or perhaps a visit to the Lofoten Islands, or maybe even a cruise of the fjords. Who knows what the future holds, but I know that visiting places north of where I live is where I feel pulled to. What are your favourite northern travel destinations? Where should I go next?! Has anyone been to the Faroe Islands?
