Day 12. As a photographer I am always looking to try out new things and this photo is a prime example of that. I was inspired by a comment on a post I had seen on Facebook that showed a sunset sky reflected on the roof of a car (the post was in a private group so I can’t link to it, but I will share the photo in the comments). I promptly went online and looked for something reflective to add to my camera bag and came across a credit card sized camping mirror. Because of its compact size it’s the one item other than my phone that tends to go with me everywhere. It’s fun to see the varying degrees of success when trying reflections in different scenarios. Believe me when I say there have been plenty of “What was I thinking?!” moments of failure, but equally there have been some great victories and I’ve even had some success combining the use of the mirror with my lensballs.
This particular photo remains one of my all time favourite images and it was one of the first I captured with the camping mirror. There’s a magic to it that I can’t quite place, with Holyhead Mountain floating in the sky to the right hand side and the mystical reflected cloud patterns creating intrigue and mystery.
With the advances in editing capabilities and the increasing use of AI, sometimes it’s hard to tell what is real and what is created, but this image is entirely unedited, straight from the (iPhone XR) camera. I have said before that photography is an art form and despite the very real nature of this image I think it’s safe to suggest that it is a work of art. Experimenting with something new can be a wonderful experience and even when things don’t turn out as anticipated, sometimes the results can be spectacular. Never stop trying new things!
