Prior to moving back to North Wales I spent a few years living on the East/West Midlands border, with the Peak District on my doorstep, and after lockdown restrictions were lifted my dad and I were able to meet up for a day of photography - no excursion for us would be complete without a camera in our hands! I owe my interest in photography to both my dad and my stepdad, both keen photographers, each with interest in different genres of photography and with differing styles. Their influence has most certainly helped to shape the photographer I am today.
We started the day in the east of the Peak District, just outside Sheffield at a place called Wyming Brook (a story for another day) before heading southwest to find the heather in full bloom at Surprise View. And what a surprise view it was! This photo doesn’t really do it justice, the vibrant pinks and purples of the blanket of blooming heather stretched out to the horizon where it was met by the bluest of blue skies peppered with translucent white clouds. Whilst here we also took in the views towards Grindleford before heading down into Bolehill Quarry, home to a dense forest of silver birches and a huge collection of abandoned millstones (all photos to be shared another day!) If you find yourself in the Peak District in late summer I would definitely recommend coming to explore this area whilst the heather is in bloom and I think I’d like to return in the future with one of my lensballs in-tow for a different view of the stunning colours.
A trip out specifically for photography in anyone's company is a wonderful adventure, but going with a fellow photographer adds an extra dimension to proceedings, offering opportunities to learn from each other, be inspired to try something different, give and receive constructive feedback and even a bit of friendly competition. If anyone would like to join me for a day of photography in the future, give me a shout.
