Day 8 finds us back at Bangor Garth Pier - I perhaps could have spread these images out a little throughout the month! Since moving across town and now having these stunning views on our doorstep, we have witnessed all the seasons and every type of weather but never are two days the same.

Before the pier was built a ferry service ran from the stone jetty that still stands adjacent to the pier. This was the main crossing point to Anglesey before either of the bridges were built. The rise in steamer traffic sailing through Bangor to Liverpool and Douglas presented challenges for loading and unloading both passengers and cargo, with rowing boats used to ferry everything back and forth from the shore to the steamers - hazardous to say the least. A better solution was needed and the pier we have today is a direct result of the years of consultation, planning and designing that ensued. There was a floating landing stage at the head of the pier, accessed by a girder bridge and the pier proved to be resoundingly popular, with hundreds of thousands of people enjoying the frequent steamer services from the new landing stage. At the pier head there was an open sided bandstand and the pier became an entertainment destination, with variety performances and brass bands among the most popular acts. The pier achieved remarkable success right up to 1914, which is where we will leave our story today. What happened in 1914 I hear you ask? That will have to wait until our next visit to Bangor Garth Pier!
